My site is in pdf format. Can I ‘hit’ the site repeatedly from the same computer after I have found it in a google or yahoo search string and increase the hits, or will the fact that the same IP is hitting it result in only one hit regardless? Also, are there any suggestions on free ways to increase traffic other than linking to other sites? I have submitted the site to search engines already.

offline promotion like having one flyer with your website name on it. i can imagine that if your .pdf files are free course projects and you distribute flyers around campus you can hope for quite a good number of hits.
‘hitting’ as per the way you described it makes little impact because it will count you as ‘new visitor’ once and then you became ‘repetitive visitor’ .. rank goes higher for sites that show increase in the number of both new and repetitive visitors. Let’s continue with the university example – if you distribute 1000 flyers and get 100 visitors and 20 of them come back tomorrow ..and this repeats during the entire month, your ranking will most surely improve.
I have three suggestions.
One, make sure that you have descriptions of your pdf documents that are written in text and include the keywords that you want to show up in the search engines.
Two, use contextual advertising like Google Adwords or Yahoo’s Overture to pay to send people to your site.
Three, use a Pay To Click service that can send thousands of visitors to your site for very little money (the service linked to below starts at only $6.50). If you are simply looking to beef up your stats and gain a few interested people in the process, this is a great way to go.
