I am a college graduate that is planning on furthering my education even more. I am not sure if I should go the MBA route, or specialize in a certain field such as marketing or PR. I know it depends on what I really want to do, but I am totally open to whatever will give me the best opportunities in the future. Anytime you talk to an adviser who is affiliated with a certain college or program, I feel like they’re just trying to sell their program instead of guiding me towards what is best for me.

A general MBA program may be a good choice for you since you seem like you could be interested a few different business topics. You’ll be able to take a variety of classes and see which one really piques your interest the most. Many schools allow you to specialize or major in business areas such as marketing. A general MBA will also probably have more opportunities in the future because it is broader. If you decide to change your mind in the future, an MBA will still be valuable whereas Marketing may not be valuable being an accountant.

There are a couple of places you can look. The first is the Occupational Outlook handbook by the bureau of labor statistics:http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos105.htm Look around there. You can also look through http://craigslist.org Judge by the frequency of types of job postings. That might give you hints. This won’t tell you job outlooks but you can learn what different professions pay: http://salary.com

Do whatever you feel the most passionate about. Do you enjoy finance, accounting, management, marketing? Which interests you the most? A common miss understanding among many students is that whatever you major in, you are stuck doing for the rest of your life. I am a CEO of a multi-million dollar corporation and I majored in Political Science. It doesn’t matter what you major in, you can go into any industry when you graduate. You want to enjoy the years you put into your degree, and you will perform better also. As for a career, you are not limited based on your degree. You will create your own opportunities. Go into a career field that you enjoy, even if it doesn’t have the highest average pay. If you are passionate with what you do, you will be one of the best, and the best in any career field get paid the best. You will also love your life more if you do something you like. Life is to short to torture yourself in an industry you don’t enjoy. Money cannot be what drives you to pick a certain career path. People who chase money don’t come out on top.
